THE DIARY OF AN EROTIC WRITER

Happy Sex

For an erotic novel, a happy ending means happy sex. By some standards, a novel doesn't count as a romance unless it ends with a committed relationship.  The question is, committed to what? If the story centers on the erotic lives of the characters, as mine always do, then the goal is to get the main characters to a point when they can fuck happily ever after (HEA) or at least be happy for now (HFN). Since I call my stories erotic romances, I always have in mind that the ending needs to be happy.

Since a novel needs to start with a character who faces serious conflicts (an unhappy person). The character has to work toward resolution of those conflicts. In erotic novels, this happens in the context of good sex.  In real life, or in mainstream novels, fucking your way to happiness only goes so far. In erotic fiction, it goes a lot farther.

The novel I'm in the process of rewriting, Love Wild, is the first I've written in which the happy ending (happy for now and possibly forever) is shared by three people--two men and one woman. She's insatiable, the guys are buddies, and everyone is happy, happy, happy.
